Ramen is a Japanese dish enjoyed by people of all ages and is a popular genre of Japanese cuisine that transcends regions and cultures. Ramen offers a wide variety of soup styles, including tonkotsu (pork bone broth), miso (soybean paste), shio (salt), and shoyu (soy sauce), and is appealing for its ability to combine fast service with consistent quality. Within the food and beverage industry, ramen franchises are considered relatively easy to enter and offer strong potential for high profitability.
This article summarizes ramen franchise trends in the U.S. market, along with the features, franchise costs, and support systems of key brands. It provides information to help people interested in starting a Japanese food franchise evaluate their options.

The U.S. ramen market has expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.5% over the past five years (2020 to 2025) and is expected to reach a market size of $1.6 billion in 2025. Driven by the growing popularity of Japanese cuisine and younger generations’ interest in global food culture, ramen has evolved from an instant food into an authentic dining experience.
Among Millennials and Generation Z, a strong interest in Japanese culture, driven by anime and social media, has fueled support for ramen as a customizable, immersive dining experience. The market is expanding beyond urban areas into the suburbs and remains a promising sector with stable growth expected going forward.
The ramen business model is expected to be highly profitable. In general, broths and noodles have low food costs, and their fast service speeds make it easier to achieve high table turnover.
In recent years, ramen izakaya concepts that emphasize appetizers, snacks, and alcoholic beverages have also been increasing.
Although customer dwell time increases, profitability is maintained by raising the average check by 20 to 30%*. In New York, high turnover is maintained at a premium price range of $15 to $20*, while in California, beverage offerings are strengthened to increase average spend, reflecting revenue strategies tailored to regional characteristics.
As of October 2025, there are 23,490 Japanese restaurants in the United States*1, of which 4,652 are ramen restaurants*2. Since there are only 103 tempura restaurants (at the same point in time)*3, ramen stands out as one of the most prominent categories among Japanese cuisine.
On the other hand, the market is fragmented as each leading company’s share is less than 5%*4, and a variety of businesses—from individually owned to chain enterprises—coexist. Elements such as flavor consistency, in-restaurant experience, regional characteristics, and cultural storytelling allow for differentiation, suggesting that this is a market where there is a lot of competition, but with creativity, there is significant potential for growth.
In the ramen business model, key components such as broth, sauce, and noodles are produced in bulk in a central kitchen, making it easier for local staff to maintain consistent quality. By having the headquarters handle preparation and flavor adjustments, the restaurants can focus on simple tasks such as heating and plating.
Standardizing these processes allows restaurants to open after a short training period, and reduces flavor variation across multiple locations, making operations more efficient in terms of both quality control and staff development.
Japanese cuisine is rapidly becoming a popular genre in the United States. Moving forward, however, there will be a growing demand for "authentic Japanese cuisine" rather than just "Japanese-style" adaptations.
Therefore, this media platform introduces carefully selected franchise brands directly from Japan. We highlight recommended companies and genres that offer promising profitability based on regional characteristics, so please use this information as a guide.

This long-established ramen brand from Asahikawa, Hokkaido, is known for its mild tonkotsu broth that can be enjoyed to the last drop. The signature dish, Shio Ramen, is enjoyed by a wide range of generations for its harmonious balance of a creamy paitan broth and savory salt flavor. The brand operates approximately 65 locations worldwide, including 16 in the United States (based on information from the official website as of November 7, 2025). They have established a quality control system that enables all locations to maintain the same flavors as the flagship restaurant.
Although it is a bit tucked away, the presence of other restaurants nearby makes it easier to find. The rich broth is so delicious that I can't help but eat it with rice. The restaurant’s original soupless tantanmen is highly recommended.
I stopped by for a solo lunch.
Although it’s a popular place, it wasn’t crowded since I arrived early. The shio ramen was rich and full-bodied, and paired with thick-cut pork, it was very filling.
I visited with colleagues from work during lunch break. I’ve been here several times before, and I like that they offer both ramen and tsukemen (dipping noodles), which lets me try a variety of options. I usually go for tsukemen on hot days and shio ramen on colder days, but since it’s a Hokkaido ramen shop, many people probably come specifically for the miso ramen as well. It’s not very flashy, but it feels like a place where regulars often come on their own. You can always count on Santouka.

Originating from Hiroshima, this ramen brand is known for its rich tonkotsu soy sauce broth, made by carefully simmering it on-site. The rich umami of tonkotsu is layered with the fragrant aroma of soy sauce, creating a bowl that is rich yet easy to finish. Without relying on skilled chefs, the brand has established a system that enables even inexperienced staff to consistently deliver the same quality through training and manuals. The brand operates approximately 65 locations worldwide (based on information from the official website as of November 7, 2025), and with no locations currently in the United States, there is an opportunity to become the first operator.
...The menu ranges from pork- and chicken-bone soy sauce broth to richer, back-fat varieties. Since I’m not a fan of heavier styles, I ordered the signature pork- and chicken-bone soy sauce ramen, Bari-Uma.
The thin noodles, similar to Hakata-style ramen, paired well with the pork- and chicken-bone soy sauce broth, making it easy to enjoy and not overly rich, which made it delicious ^_^
The chashu was also hearty and satisfying.
The gyoza had crispy, lacy edges that added a nice texture. It was unusual for a ramen shop to offer self-service, all-you-can-eat pickles.
It was a great deal at under ¥1,000.

The brand operates 77 locations worldwide, primarily in North America, including 63 in the United States (based on information from the official website as of December 9, 2025).
It was a delight for my colleague and I to find this place. I highly recommend the spicy chicken ramen. The “hot” was perfect for me. And there is a decent selection of cocktails and zero-proof drink options.
Great atmosphere. Great and really fast food delivery. I’m not a noodles person but enjoyed it. Emily was an excellent waiter. Did not discourage the use of a fork. Parking available in a free lot directly behind row of restaurants.
So I came to this place because the hotel recommended. I ordered tonkotsu black ramen. What an amazing food experience, the last time that I have a similar experience was at Ramen Underground in San Francisco.

Everything a Japanese ramen chain restaurant should be. Conveniently right across from little Tokyo. Service was fast and the food excellent.
Authentic Japanese ramen served in a friendly atmosphere, using traditional Japanese seasonings. Excellent unobtrusive and efficient service. The menu comprises a large range of ramen - but it’s not hard to choose because there are excellent explanations of the differences. I think this is part of a chain of restaurants.
The ramen there is amazing.
The broth is excellent and vegetable based. I had the amber soy sauce with chicken.
