Yakiniku is a Japanese cuisine experience that engages all five senses through aroma, sound, and the moment of grilling over an open flame. This article outlines the potential of the yakiniku business model from a franchising perspective for individuals and investors interested in operating Japanese restaurants in the United States.

It is a Japanese food category with significant growth potential, and demand for Japanese food franchises continues to expand in the United States.
Because the core value of yakiniku lies in the experience of grilling meat on a tabletop grill, it is a format that is easy to differentiate from other dining concepts. Pricing is closely tied to the dining experience, so emphasizing premium ingredients also helps secure a higher average check.
For these reasons, yakiniku can be regarded as a strong option as an experiential, high-value-added restaurant format that scales well as a franchise.
With broad flexibility in designing both cost structure and average check, this format makes it easy to build a revenue model. Because customers grill the food themselves, operations do not rely on highly skilled culinary staff, allowing labor costs to be controlled.
In a premium positioning, emphasizing the experiential value of wagyu and rare cuts offers a clear advantage, allowing per-person spending to be built up through courses and set menus.
Families, couples, coworkers, and groups of friends typically dine and pay together, which tends to increase revenue per party. Because business meals and group dining are common, adding beverages (especially alcoholic drinks) helps boost the average check, which is a key advantage in terms of profitability.
While the number of yakiniku restaurants is gradually increasing in urban areas, there are still many underserved areas compared to sushi and ramen, leaving room for differentiation. Of the 23,490 Japanese restaurants in total*1, there are 6,000 ramen shops*2 and 22,611 sushi restaurants*3, compared with just 111 yakiniku restaurants*4, clearly highlighting the disparity in restaurant counts.
In yakiniku, the process of grilling the meat oneself is itself a source of experiential value, and because there are few close substitutes within Japanese cuisine, the format is less prone to price competition.
Because guests handle part of the cooking in yakiniku, the heating processes required in the kitchen are limited, allowing service flow to be streamlined. By clearly defining standard recipes, cutting specifications, and plating guidelines, inconsistencies in taste and appearance across locations can be reduced.
Standardized cooking procedures and reduced reliance on individual staff are factors that align particularly well with franchise expansion. Staff training can be completed in a short period of time, and even inexperienced workers can easily follow the operations, making it easier to maintain stable restaurant operations. For owners considering multi-location expansion, the ability to reduce risk in both initial training and ongoing operating costs is a major advantage.
Japanese cuisine is rapidly becoming a popular genre in the United States. Moving forward, however, there will be a growing demand for "authentic Japanese cuisine" rather than just "Japanese-style" adaptations.
Therefore, this media platform introduces carefully selected franchise brands directly from Japan. We highlight recommended companies and genres that offer promising profitability based on regional characteristics, so please use this information as a guide.

The Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ is an amazing Japanese cuisine style restaurant that offers guests a unique and superb dining experience. In December of 2018, I brought and treated my wife and myself for dinner at Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ to celebrate our Happy Engagement Anniversary!!! We very much enjoyed our visit at this great restaurant. Both my wife and I were kindly welcomed and treated politely by the restaurant’s staff and we found our meal to be absolutely delicious!!! We highly enjoyed seasoning and cooking our own meals and our table grill did a great job on heating our food!!! Both my wife and I highly recommend for everyone to visit and dine Gyu-Kaku!!!
I have been to several restaurants across the USA, and they never disappoint. Food is delicious, love to cook my meat but also have a little bit of privacy. Ambience is cool and upbeat.
Visited for late lunch and chose meat lovers menu alongside a few individual dishes. Great choice of cuts and sauces left whole family happy. Half price beers and cocktails in happy hour.

a Gyu-Kaku franchise

A popular yakiniku chain operating over 100 locations in Japan*, long supported as a brand that allows customers to enjoy authentic Japanese-style yakiniku at an affordable price. Its meat preparation, cutting techniques, and proprietary sauce recipes are fully systematized, enabling it to differentiate itself in the United States as “authentic Japanese-style yakiniku.” In addition, its focus on offering high-quality meats, such as wagyu, American wagyu, and USDA Prime beef, is highly regarded by customers who are particularly attentive to meat quality.
With its high meat quality, broad menu selection, and approachable atmosphere, Gyushige can be considered a highly competitive franchise brand in the U.S. market.
I went to Gyushige with friends and was truly impressed. The thick-cut beef tongue, bone-in short ribs, filet mignon, rib fingers, and duck breast were all fresh and delicious, and the short ribs in particular were so good that we ordered more. The Hokkaido sea urchin shot was amazing and a must-try for any sea urchin lover. The matcha desserts were delicious, and the drinks were thoughtfully made as well. Most of all, our waiter Brian provided outstanding service, patiently explaining how to cook each dish and offering great recommendations. The interior was clean, and we felt comfortable dining there.
At around $95 per person, the price isn’t cheap, but the atmosphere and food are top-notch and well worth it. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant fills up quickly. This is definitely a place I’d love to visit again.
I hadn’t eaten out much over the past year, so I visited Gyushige because I really wanted to enjoy something truly delicious again. I sometimes enjoy A5 wagyu at home, but since it arrives frozen, it can be a bit hard to handle. By contrast, Gyushige’s A5 wagyu comes pre-sliced to about 3/8 of an inch, and when grilled at the table, it turns out beautifully browned on the outside while staying medium rare inside.
The staff carefully grilled the wagyu for us, then cut it into bite-sized pieces and served it. We also asked them to keep the grill on, so we could lightly reheat the meat to our liking and enjoy it at its best. The sauces and salts served alongside the meat also brought out its natural flavors.
The service here is magical and the food and experience is a great time. Will come back over and over. Thank you manager Brian and Ryan for a great time.

We walked in with no reservations and were seated immediately. Our waiter was attentive, friendly, and expedited our orders. This is our third visit to Gyuzo. We decided on a delicious assortment of appetizers. Including Flaming Scallops and Tako Corn Dog (octopus legs). New to us: Excellent flavor in the squid ink rice dish. The bar drinks were very well prepared as well.
Wonderful experience. Great atmosphere, exceptional service from the staff and fun to cook the food. Meats, seafood and chicken were very flavorful, beautifully seasoned or marinaded. Located right in Rockville town center with a Japanese ice cream place next door to extend the fun. The staff was attentive, informative and made us feel very special. Must try! We are already talking about going back!!
Raw cuts of meat are brought to your table and everyone grills their portions over a gas burner in the center of the table. Four of us shared the Ozeki. It was a generous quantity of food for us. The different cuts of beef were quite different. Everything was delicious. The room is attractive and the service is attentive.

Everything is delicious but the chateaubriand steak is absolutely fantastic! Never seen it done like this before… well seasoned and just melts in the mouth!
The staff are also so attentive and polite. We all had an excellent evening. A MUST if visiting Fukuoka and looking for an authentic Japanese BBQ experience.
I personally thought the salted tongue and skirt steak were delicious! The fillet that can be shredded with a fork is a specialty of this restaurant, so be sure to order it!
They also have semi-private seats, so even if you have small children with you, you can enjoy your meal at your own pace without worrying about the people around you✨️

Yakiniku Great is a Japanese yakiniku restaurant brand operated by Imaginations, a company with restaurant operations in Japan and overseas. For investors exploring Japanese food franchise opportunities in the United States, the brand offers a specialized Japanese barbecue concept with international development experience behind it.
We ordered Omakase (Matsu) per person. And we were delighted with every course. Every meat comes with their own suggested dipping sauce. Every meat surprised us with how soft and tasty it was. The finale was dipped in an egg mixture which brought out the awesome taste of the beef.
I highly recommend this restaurant. Service was excellent. It is kinda pricey, but it was all worth the price.
Very good beef here and staff will tell you how many seconds on each side to be done “just right”. Not cheap but if you want good beef quality, casual environment, it’s highly recommended.
AS soon as you walk into this restaurant, you can feel the buzz. The ambiance is great and the servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the different cuts of meat. They explain in great detail about how long each cut of beef is to be cooked. For non beef eaters, they also offer chicken, pork and seafood. The lettuce salad and their fresh kimchi are so fresh and delicious--highly recommended! We had a very enjoyable meal here! Unfortunately, we were all too full to try out their desserts.
Must dine here!
